One of the things I have found to happen inadvertently throughout my life is the sudden awareness of patterns. Ever since I was a young child, I would at some moment notice that I had seen an unusual amount of a certain color that day, or that a particular number would appear over and over again to me, or that everyone around me seemed to be in a similar "mood" or carrying the same "energy". As I grew older and began to view it as more than just an interesting ability, I took these occurrences as signals that suggested I be alert to the fact that there was something important going on and I was to receive some kind of understanding. All of this is to say that today, as I was reviewing client notes and also thinking about my own life, I saw a pattern that strung us all together. We are all waiting for something...
One person is waiting for the opportunity to open his own business, one person is waiting for the love of her life, one person is waiting to see if she is going to get the promotion she feels as though she deserves. Yet another is waiting for his mother-in-law to move out of their house so he can be happy, while the next is waiting to buy a house until he finds a mate. Better yet, we ALL are waiting for "the right time" to make a certain move...waiting for that apology that is the only thing we feel can heal a wound we suffer from...waiting for the weather to turn nice so we can feel better...waiting for the stars to align and confirm that it is safe to venture out of our comfort zone. We are waiting for enough positive feedback about a certain thing before we can validate it to ourselves...we are waiting to approach someone we are interested in until we have lost the 10 pounds and look like a million dollars...we are waiting to win the lottery, be saved from our troubles by some kind of hero, be given the answer to life in a fortune cookie. We are waiting for someone to recognize how fascinating we are, under all of our layers. We are all waiting for something...
Waiting--the act of staying still in one place, in anticipation of something coming TO us. It is without effort, without movement, without energy. We linger in this passive state of existence, WAITING. While waiting in and of itself isn't something we can avoid altogether, after all, some things we cannot control or speed up, but it is the fact that we are ON HOLD and in suspended animation in some aspect of our life until the other shoe drops that is somewhat---well, sad. What if we never lose that 10 pounds...do we never go after love? What if we don't win the lottery...does our life suck? What if no one comes to save us from ourselves...do we self-destruct completely? What if we never get that apology...do we continue to bleed out? What if the "opportunity" never comes to open our own business...do we let the dream fade? My question is: When do we stop WAITING...and start LIVING?
