We could all fill in the rest of this phrase with myriad objectives, goals, dreams, things to do, ideas or promises. "I'm gonna own my own business one day", "I'm gonna quit smoking", "I'm gonna get a better job", "I'm gonna lose 20 pounds", "I'm gonna start up that hobby I have always wanted to try"...blah, blah, blah. Having something to shoot for is key in making things happen. The question is, how often do we actually FOLLOW THROUGH and do what we say we are GONNA do?
Sure...life gets complicated and busy and overwhelming at times. We become bogged down with the minutia of our every day obligations and activities. We have responsibilities to that which we have already committed and often find ourselves going through the motions of the life we have already created. However, when does it become time for us to stop using that as an excuse to NOT create the life we WANT? When do we transform the "I'm GONNA" to the "I AM"?
At some point, we have to start being real with ourselves. Continuing to issue statements that we never follow up on dilutes our word to those around us and begins to emit the fragrance that we cannot be taken seriously and are full of nothing but hot air. More importantly, however, our constant pie-in-the-sky talking with no walking slowly erodes our own sense of self-worth and personal power. Eventually, we don't even believe OURSELVES when we say we are going to do something. We use our words as a band-aid to buy time and avoid discomfort. What we must realize is that most of our "I'm gonna" statements are directives from within designed to help us become better people. Ignoring them, or treating them with little regard or importance, is like spitting in our own faces. The time is NOW to stop fooling ourselves. How about a little less bark and a little more bite?
